There is no time like the summer to enjoy a romantic camping trip with your significant other. The crackling campfire, the stars twinkling overhead, and your best friend cuddled up at your side — there’s no question that camping and romance go hand-in-hand. Whether you’re newlyweds or have been married for decades, your next camping trip can be the most romantic get-away of your life. All it takes is a little thoughtful planning and the right attitude.
As you start planning your romantic camping trip, think about your partner’s likes and dislikes. Does he love chocolate? Does she like gourmet meals? Are there special things you can pack that will be a fun surprise on your trip? Since camping is often about roughing it, bringing along an item of comfort can be a delight, whether it’s a favorite pillow, a new pair of wool socks, or a delicious cup of hot chocolate or coffee.
Destination Choose your destination carefully. Your friend will probably be happiest if they’re comfortable and entertained. That means choosing a destination that won’t be too hot or too cold, and picking a place that offers plenty of fun things to do. Pack for Comfort Be sure to pack enough items to make sure that your romantic camping experience is comfortable. This includes making sure that the mattress pads are in good condition, that the sleeping bags are nice and comfy and can be zipped together. Rather than packing light, be sure to bring enough gear to have a nice comfortable camping trip.
Get Some Exercise Studies have shown that people feel more romantic when they’ve gotten some exercise during the day. Start off your trip with a day hike, a bike ride, a cross-country ski adventure, or a walk along the beach. Spend some time doing something you both enjoy, whether it’s canoeing and kayaking or taking a sail across the lake.
Plan the Menu There’s no reason your camping menu can’t be just as ambitious as anything you’d make at home. Plan ahead, pack a cooler, and be prepared to take your time with the cooking process. Desert camping can be an amazing and rewarding experience. Deserts can be some of the most challenging destinations for a camping trip, but they are beautiful and fascinating ecosystems. Here are a few great desert destinations throughout the United States.

Anza-Borrego State Park, CA

This is the largest state park in California. Visitors will find that this is an excellent desert destination for enjoying all sorts of recreation, including hiking, biking and more. In addition, visitors can enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna that inhabit the landscape, including bighorn sheep and colorful wildflowers.

Death Valley National Park, CA and NV

Death Valley National Park is home to the lowest, driest and hottest spot in North America and there have been years in which no rain was recorded. Although the park gets hot and dry there are some truly amazing natural wonders to check out in Death Valley National Park. Travelers can hike through the narrow Mosaic Canyon or view the pupfish found only at Salt Creek in the Stovepipe Wells area. In the Furnace Creek Area visitors will find the Devil’s Golf Course to see the wind eroded rock salt spires and walk under the natural bridge. Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America. Travelers with a proper vehicle can drive out to the Racetrack to see the mysterious tracks left by the rocks sliding across the lakebed.

Flagstaff, AZ

Visitors to the city and region around Flagstaff, Arizona will find a wonderful high altitude desert landscape. Flagstaff is home to the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world. It is also conveniently located near seven unique national parks. In addition, the city is located at over 7,000 feet in elevation. The high elevation helps make Flagstaff a great destination for winter recreation, especially snow sports.

Four Corners, CO, NM, UT, AZ

Located in southwest Colorado, Four Corners Monument is the only spot where you can stand in four states at one time. At the Four Corners marker you can stand in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona at one time. Four Corners is located in a remote location, and is an ideal spot to enjoy some of the desert recreation in the four states. Visitors can stop at Canyonlands National Park in Utah, Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico and Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona. These four destinations are some of the most interesting and beautiful spots in the region.

Joshua Tree National Park, CA

Located in southeastern California Joshua Tree has some amazing desert ecosystems, and the park is also an excellent spot for enjoying night sky viewing, especially while camping among many other spectacular natural sights. At Joshua Tree you can see the Milky Way with amazing clarity, using only binoculars. In addition, Joshua Tree National Park is a great spot to enjoy the beautiful and unique Joshua Trees. The park is also a great spot for enjoying other desert plants, including fascinating cactus species like cholla and ocotillo.

Palm Springs, CA

Palm Springs is a great destination for enjoying the desert ecosystem in an urban location. Visitors with children should be sure to stop at the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, this is a great spot to learn all about the desert. Travelers can also enjoy the views from an aerial tour, which is unique way to enjoy all of the beauty of the desert landscape. There are many destinations for visitors to explore in the Palm Springs region, including the Indian Canyons and more.

Mojave Desert National Preserve, CA

This beautiful preserve covers 1.6 million acres in California. A large portion  of this preserve is only available for off-loading. In addition, almost half of the area is classified as a wilderness area. Visitors can explore the beauty of the Mojave Desert within this preserve. The area is also home to some very interesting geologic points, including the extinct volcanoes at the Cinder Cones Lava Beds.

Saguaro National Park, AZ

Saguaro National Park is dedicated to the preservation of the stunning Saguaro cactus. The amazing, towering cactus only grows in a select part of the world. Visitors to the Saguaro National Park will have the opportunity to see much more than just the Saguaro. There are guided programs and many opportunities for recreation within the park. Saguaro National Park is an especially good location for wilderness hiking.

Yum–always a seasonal favorite. This time of year there are many apple varieties to choose from. This version replaces half the mayo with yogurt, which adds a bit of tang and has fewer calories. Yes!

Ingredients:

2-3 apples, cubed

1/2 cup walnuts. halved

1/2 cup mayonnaise

zest and juice from 1/2 lemon

1 tsp honey or granulated sugar

2-3 celery ribs, sliced

1/4 cup golden raisins or dried cranberries

1/4 cup seedless grapes (red grapes look great!)

Coming the apples, celery, nuts and raisins in a bowl. Next combine the yogurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice, lemon zest, honey, and pepper in another bowl. Just before serving pour the dressing over the apple mixture and toss thoroughly. Place in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Pour an autumn brew or some iced tea and enjoy!

The last leg before U.S. border–Last post!

 

We stopped at the top of Rogers Pass before going down into Golden, B.C. and just had to include a photo of Mount Revelstoke, a beautiful, beautiful mountain outside of its namesake town.

This trailer shot is no “Flat Stanley”. We were really there.

I had seen photos of the country and mountains around Golden and could hardly wait to see them. However, it was so smoky from fires all over the country, we could hardly see them. Disappointedly, I took some photos but I’m sure they are so much more than what the camera could capture.

Leaving Golden the next morning, we traveled in an absolutely gorgeous valley between the Canadian Rockies and the Columbia River from Golden to Fort Steele, B.C.

We spent our last night north of the U.S. border at Fort Steele, B.C. in a beautiful campground. We opened our special bottle of homemade wine given to me by a good friend/winemaker and toasted our wonderful adventure. The geranium, “Gertie” made the trip all the way with us. I scattered Mom’s ashes in Cook Inlet, Alaska. She said anywhere beautiful, she loved the ocean and loved mountains. It was all there in one beautiful package.

I hope everyone enjoyed coming along with us on this great adventure. Cross one off the “Bucket List”. From here, we travel into Montana, Idaho, back into Nevada and then Connie home to California.

p.s. We shouldn’t have any problems getting home. We had two flat tires on the 5th-wheel 20 minutes apart leaving Missoula and then discovered a problem with axle supports and had to camp in the Stevensville, Mont. Les Schwab parking lot, have a welder come the next morning to fix that and then, because we were totally out of spare tires, had to buy 4 new trailer tires. Glad we are heading home.
